What do women want to wear? Rising American Fashion designer Phillip Lim may just have found that answer. His eponymous label, 3.1 Phillip Lim has quietly become the authority on effortlessly chic and youthful elegance. His clothes may not be for the faint-hearted, as seen on Alexa Chung at the recent Met Gala Ball, because he never loses sight of what is fresh. He may pair a chiffon skirt with a structured boxy jacket in one breath, seeming to have one eye on ‘now’ and the other on what’s coming next. He has said that his goal is to “refine instead of define” but it’s increasingly clear that he is helping to define and shape what women really want.
The 3.1 number is a play on his age around the time he started the label. Humbly starting out as an intern designing for a small L.A fashion line in 1999, he never planned for a career in fashion and he claims to have been surprised to find out how easy it was for him at first; it was as if the doors had been waiting for him to open. His first few season’s collection earned him all kinds of praise. He received the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund nomination just one year after he launched his 3.1 collection. In 2007, he again won the prestigious CFDA Swarovski award over his fellow design contenders -Thakoon and Rodarte. His collection is always seen on the stylish set looking for wearable yet fashionable pieces that won’t break bank. For instance, this summer this silk blend jersey jumpsuit retails for £360 while this slouchy guru shorts retails for £233. Mr. Lim may be accused of causing serious lust amongst women but that is not necessarily a bad thing.
