29-year old Fearne Cotton began her career as a TV presenter for The Disney Club, going on to achieve TV and radio fame on programs such as Top of the Pops and BBC Radio 1’s Chart Show. Talented and ambitious, Cotton has conquered the world of presenting and recently set herself a new challenge – to become a noted fashion designer. It is not a surprising career move when you consider that she has been a style icon for young women since the very beginning of her rise to fame.
Her debut collection, designed for Very.co.uk, launched back in 2009 along with a host of other celebrities who each designed their own range for the site. The most popular by far, Cotton’s design skill became obvious when her collection rose above the rest to become amongst the best-selling items sold by this new e-boutique. Now, she has just brought out her 5th in a line of successful, fashion-forward collections which is set to be the best yet.
Inspired by a mixture of 50’s cuts, 70’s style and current catwalk trends, the clothes and shoes are relatively simple but beautifully done – it’s the small things that make her range stand out, such as the touch of fringing on an otherwise traditional mock-wrap dress or the sheer cut-out below the Peter Pan collar on a beautiful floral mini dress (above).
Talking about her new design career, Cotton says she is “over the moon” and loves that she gets to just sit down and sketch her dream wardrobe and the Very team create it for her. She clearly has a thing for capes – a short cape just covers the shoulders on a polkadot shift dress, cape-style jackets punctuate the collection in tartan and on-trend Japanese embroidery and one of her favourite pieces is a stunning, floaty, cape-style mini dress in colourful chiffon that she describes as “elegant but demure”.
So why has Cotton turned her hand to design? “I love the fact that a simple item of clothing or pair of shoes can brighten your day, fill you with confidence, make you feel sexy and almost change your world for a while. The power of clothing is not to be underestimated”, she says.
