Christian was born in Annapolis in 1985 by both Italian and German parents. He said that his parents supported the Arts and encouraged Christian and his sister to pursue them too. As a child he studied ballet and he described himself as “a musical theatre kid who loved costumes”. The interest in costume led Siriano to pursue a career in fashion. He started designing at the age of thirteen, attended Baltimore School for the Arts and then went to study fashion in London. Christian had the opportunity to learn with two of the finest British designers, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen.
In 2008,Christian was crowned the winner of Project Runway. His collection for the final featured musketeer-inspired clothing, featuring ruffles, feathers and headwear. After winning the show Christian designed a fifteen-piece collection for Puma. He also got to design a collection for Bluefly as part of his prize for winning Project Runway. His first fashion collection, under his own label, debuted at New York Fashion Week in September 2008. He got to collaborate on a maternity line with Moody Mamas founders Elise Rosemarin and Marta Abrams. The line was entitled Fierce Mamas. In December 2008, he signed a deal to design a line of shoes for Payless Shoes and the range went into stores in Fall 2009. In February 2009, Christian teamed up with LG to create a fashion phone; it was called LG Lotus (LX600). In October 2009, the designer released a book entitled ‘Fierce Style: How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self’.
Christian has a vast client list from the world of film, music, television and fashion. His clients include; Emily Blunt, Rosario Dawson, Alexis Bledel, Mena Suvari, Vanessa Williams, Maggie Grace, Gabrielle Union, Whoopi Goldberg, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Pink, Estelle, Sia, Kelly Rowland, Nichole Scherzinger, Christina Hendricks, Becki Newton, Heidi Klum, Miranda Cosgrove, Emmy Rossum, Victoria Beckham, Brooklyn Decker, Veronica Webb, Leigh Lezark, Tavi Gevinson, Melania Trump, Amber Rose and Alessandra Ambrosio.
It has been quite tough for Christian to shake off the Project Runway association. European women inspired his fourth collection that was shown at New York Fashion Week for Fall 2010. Critics said that they could still see associations with the television show and that perhaps Siriano might have looked back at his parent’s roots for inspiration. For his Spring 2011 show, and although it was a fresh looking collection with lots of white and earthy colours, critics still thought that not much had changed and that he was still looking toward other countries for inspiration. And so for his Fall 2011 collection, Christian decided to change that by hiring Danielle Nachmani to rein him in and move him away from the reality TV influence.
Christian Siriano has done a lot in his career considering he is only 25. So far, he has collaborated with several companies and labels but now it might be time for him to focus on growing his own label so as to boost his reputation as a credible designer. We hope to see more from him over the next few seasons.
