One To Watch | Meet Richard Braqo

Shoe designer Richard Braqo

If unique and luxurious stilettos make you weak at the knees, I am glad to announce there is a new shoe-designing extraordinaire on the horizon. Meet Richard Braqo the up and coming hailing from Ghana.

Richard, who is now based in London, moved to NYC at the age of 18 and studied at Parsons School of Design. He was the first ever to be awarded with Cesare Piacotti Accessories Award in 2009. He and Piacotti designed a collection that debuted at Vogues Fashion Night Out and was stocked in New York’s luxury retail outlets Barney’s and Saks.

Richard continued to gain experience and expand his name while working with the likes of Ikram Golding, Helmut Lang, Acne studios and Zegna. During these stints Richard was already showing a strong eye for design that was both current and sought after.

His new collection celebrates a unique type of design where two contrasting ideas form an innovatively beautiful and well executed product that can be likened to no other. He generally relies on personal interests and experiences to base his designs upon. He admits to visiting different areas of London such as Columbia Road for ‘street style gazing’.

His collection is inspired by his interest in astrology and as his star sign is a Gemini, he expresses a duality in his thinking. He explores the idea of duality and balance by “collating contrasting ideas in unexpected ways”. His current line successfully boasts all of his intentions. The shoes are characterised with the details usually found in men’s brogues as well as the conventions of a classic sharp-heeled stiletto. He goes further to surprise us with incorporation of ornamental jewellery-inspired detailing such as the ‘ankle bangle’ and metallic feather embellishments. The designer uses his own birthstone, pearl in his signature and favourite pieces in the collection.

His artistic designs are made from the finest materials that are all sourced from Italy and created by the same artisans that deliver high class quality to Armani, Prada and Azzedine Alaia. The sumptuous suede and rich velvets along with deep oxblood, moss and cobalt shades give the collection a romantic, gothic feel with an air of allure and mystery.

The brand is designed to suit a fashionable but audacious dresser and Richard has named the likes of Anna Della Russo and Daphne Guiness as his ideal clients. Richard Braqo is definitely on the radar for becoming the next big accessory designer. His collection has been featured in Vogue US, Surface Magazines and Essence – it is the personal favourite of pop star Rihanna as well as being styled on Hip Hop & RnB sensation Ciara.
