As if the world of fashion isn’t colourful enough, this new & upcoming designer has shed a new ray of sunshine on the industry. Meet Maarten Van Der Horst the designer with the ‘party beach fun’ aesthetic. Maarten was born to an Indonesian mother, and a Dutch father, and was brought up in the Netherlands. His interest in design began from an early age. He studied at Artez school of art, during that time he also interned with Chloé while in Paris. He felt that his internship had equipped him “enough to do his own thing”. Shortly afterwards he moved to London and graduated from his MA Womenswear course from Central Saint Martins. He then launched his debut collection for SS12, and has not looked back since. He is continuing to showcase his work under Lulu Kennedy’s Fashion East. In June he debuted his new unisex line during the first ever Menswear Fashion Week, London Collections: Men with a static presentation. What’s striking about Maarten’s designs is that they are effortlessly chic and fun, his signature creations incorporates the use of intricately embroidered nylon materials with vivid and unusual tropical prints that are conventionally used for Hawaiian shirts. The line gushes with [...]

Nick Hart, founder of Spencer Hart – one of the most prominent menswear brands to grace Savile Row – is not the fresh out-of-school fashion designing prodigy as many would have thought. Nick Hart is a man who likes to define difference, and walks a different path. Nick was born in Buckinghamshire and attended boarding school until the age of 16. He first became interested in Fashion when his father told him to get a job at the age of 13 and he began working in a local tailor’s shop. He admits he was only sweeping the floor but that’s where he learnt all about the tailoring industry. With new found interest hot on his taste buds, he began working in clothes shops every summer for four years. By the time he was 17, he was taking trains to Milan twice a year to knitwear fairs, meeting with companies and travelling to factories. Hart would have loved to have attended fashion college but his dyslexia may have proven to be a problem. He instead worked for stylish brands such as Timothy Everest and Chester Barrie before finally deciding to branch out into his own brand. Even though many designers showcase [...]

Who’s that girl?… For those who haven’t heard of Kuwait born designer Sophie Anderson, this is about to change. Unleashing her prints on the world of fashion her talents are definitely on the “watch list” of those in the know. The motto here is the brighter and bolder the better, this designer should come with a warning attached as her vibrant prints are guaranteed to get noticed, for all the right reasons, come Spring Summer 2013. Sophie Anderson isn’t your typical fashionista, she is a designer with a difference – her line promoting an ethical stance. The first range debuted back in October 2011, making her a relatively new face in fashion. Now leading into her third season, it would be fair to say that Sophie took a less than conventional route to end up where she is today. She’s started out as a qualified yoga teacher then turned interior designer, this allowed her the opportunity to travel and experience various cultures whilst honing her creative side – an attribute that is mirrored throughout her fashion lines. So, lets talk about that recent Spring Summer 13 collection…Think tropical themes to put you on the right track, her creations are the [...]

A designer who defines beauty as a coincidence must be an intriguing person. This is the case with Yohji Yamamoto. Whilst not knowing what to do after retiring, all he wants is to keep making clothes perfectly, designing until the very end. Yohji Yamamoto grew up in Tokyo. His father died in World War II while his mother was a dressmaker. Surprisingly , his mother did not encourage the young Yohji Yamamoto to become a designer. She expected him to study Law. But after graduation, fate must have intervened because in 1969, he completed a fashion course at Bunka Fashion College and soon after won a competition that took him to Paris, where he was trying to sell his sketches, to no avail. So he went back to Tokyo with an idea of establishing his own ready-to-wear collection. The first one consisted solely of raincoats, but appealed to some buyers. Yohji Yamamoto worked freelance until 1972, when he officially launched his own label, one he cannot imagine leaving. This long journey Yohji went through to achieve his dream could be deemed an inspiration to anyone searching to do the impossible. Yohji Yamamoto thinks designing is a difficult task, [...]

Louise Gray’s humble beginnings maybe the cliché story of a small town girl moves to the big city to chase her dream, but this tale ends with a twist. This fun-loving eccentrically bubbly designer who likes to stand out from the crowd, and crafts her fashion to be a statement of individuality. Here is five things you probably didn’t know about her… 1) She didn’t have a conventional fashion background. Unlike most aspirational designers; she didn’t intern at any big fashion houses or even in the industry at all! Louise worked for Peter Jensen while she was studying her MA but gained her experience while working for print companies and positions that required embroidery-related skills. When she studied at Central Saint Martins they personalised a timetable for her so that she could focus all her creative energy into embroidery and sewing – because she wanted to do nothing else! 2) She is a serial hoarder. Louise’s abode which she shares with her husband is a den for an endless amount knick knack novelties and bits and bobs that many of us will throw into our trash without a second’s thought. As well as collecting these items, she spray paints her [...]

If unique and luxurious stilettos make you weak at the knees, I am glad to announce there is a new shoe-designing extraordinaire on the horizon. Meet Richard Braqo the up and coming hailing from Ghana. Richard, who is now based in London, moved to NYC at the age of 18 and studied at Parsons School of Design. He was the first ever to be awarded with Cesare Piacotti Accessories Award in 2009. He and Piacotti designed a collection that debuted at Vogues Fashion Night Out and was stocked in New York’s luxury retail outlets Barney’s and Saks. Richard continued to gain experience and expand his name while working with the likes of Ikram Golding, Helmut Lang, Acne studios and Zegna. During these stints Richard was already showing a strong eye for design that was both current and sought after. His new collection celebrates a unique type of design where two contrasting ideas form an innovatively beautiful and well executed product that can be likened to no other. He generally relies on personal interests and experiences to base his designs upon. He admits to visiting different areas of London such as Columbia Road for ‘street style gazing’. His collection is inspired [...]

Having worked for Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta and Gucci it would be fair to say that designer Giles Deacon has been round the proverbial fashion block. But it wasn’t until 2004 when he released his solo collection that things really started to get interesting. Quickly becoming a household name – famed for his prints and mixtures of fabric – Giles is no stranger to the limelight. But here are 5 things that you probably didn’t know about him… 1) He didn’t always know he wanted to be a designer. It would be fair to say that Deacon fell into a career in fashion almost by accident. During his school days he studied science with the intention of becoming a marine biologist but rather fortunately for us failed his A -levels. Following this he enrolled at Harrogate art college where he discovered the flamboyant world of fashion – opting to focus on this aspect of his course as by his own admission it seemed the most “fun” department! 2) He can count Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Luella Bartly as former classmates. Studying for a degree in womenswear at Central St Martins – London’s most prestigious art and fashion design school- will [...]

Since her debut in 2008, Chrissie Morris has set a standard that definitely rivals that of other British shoe designers such as Charlotte Olympia or Nicholas Kirkwood. Having started designing at the age of 11, this British-born rising star is slowly carving out a profitable niche. Chrissie Morris didn’t just study fashion but rather closely perfected the art of fashion design at John Moore university of Liverpool. She then went on to study her MA at Milan’s Domus Academy. Although Morris started design with a passion for knitwear, she realized that her fascination for leather could no longer be ignored. The fire she felt for the material kept her in Italy after her studies. With a luxury factory based in Bologna, she shuffled between Italy and England, even though her design concepts are derived from Parisian styles. Her philosophy for shoes is to create “ Jewels for the feet”. Shoes that still hold onto the Italian craftsmanship, which appears to be a dying art. She seeks “ perfection in imperfection”. Of this she says, “As a woman, I spend a lot of time finding a way to flatter the female foot, to draw focus to the parts that deserve the right attention, [...]
